Position Summary

The position: Reporting to the Vice President of Risk Management, the Director of Claims and Litigation provides oversight for insured and non-insured claims, including hiring, training, developing, and coaching in-house claims staff and third-party administrators. This role is responsible for developing efficient claims processes, ensuring compliance with insurance policy and contractual obligations, and managing a high-volume of risk-related incidents. The Director of Claims and Litigation leads a team of claims professionals managing matters across multiple lines of insurance, with a heavy focus on commercial general liability. The Director of Claims and Litigation works closely with operations, accounting, legal, and human resources.

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the VP of Risk Management, develop and execute comprehensive claims management strategies aligned with the company’s overall business objectives
  • Oversee a complex system of claims processes, including incident triage, incident response, claim management, and litigation
  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop in-house claims management positions as necessary
  • Develop key performance metrics for direct reports
  • Develop cross-functional relationships to support claims investigation, claims resolution, and risk mitigation
  • Partner with broker and carrier claims consultants, leveraging resources as appropriate
  • Ensure accurate and timely incident and claims documentation in designated Risk Management Information Systems
  • Ensure the development, implementation, and performance of litigation management strategies, including approved attorney panels, litigation guidelines, expert designation, bill review, and other duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Ensure special handling instructions are kept up to date with the various carriers and third-party administrators
  • Ensure in-house claims handling guidelines are up to date and the team is in compliance
  • Identify and provide opportunities for improved claims handling skills across team to include investigation techniques, negotiation tactics, contract and policy review, and legal strategies
  • Ensure vendors, including law firms are paid accurately and on a timely basis, implementing processes that ensure prompt payment depending upon the insurance program structure across a broad portfolio of owned and managed properties
  • Evaluates team performance, conducts quarterly and annual review discussions, offering continuous support, coaching, and feedback
  • Supports VP of Risk Management with ad-hoc reporting, claims analysis, and support for underwriting submissions as requested
  • Approves reserve and settlements within assigned authority.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, risk management, insurance, or legal fields. Experience will substitute for education
  • 5-7 years’ experience managing large commercial insurance claims programs, including supervising multiple direct reports and managing litigated matters, including hiring and oversight of outside counsel
  • Seven years’ experience in insurance claims management
  • Texas Multi-Lines Adjuster license a plus
  • Professional risk and claims designation preferred, including AIC, SCLA, ARM, CPCU
  • Knowledge of fair housing complaint resolution and claims process.
  • Knowledge of general liability insurance policies and claims management strategies.
  • Skilled in claims management across a broad perspective of insurance coverage including auto, property, crime, employment practices, etc.
  • Skilled in conflict management and problem solving.
  • Ability to handle competing priorities and conflicting requests.
  • Skilled in handling sensitive, privileged, and confidential information appropriately.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office business software including Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint.
  • Skilled in Risk Management Information Systems.
  • Knowledge of the multi-family housing industry a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to assess complex claim situations, evaluate legal/financial exposure, and develop actionable strategies to resolve them effectively.
  • Ability to make sound, timely decisions and take ownership of outcomes across all phases of claims and litigation.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to read documents, computer screens and data
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal communications in person and over the phone or computer
  • May occasionally be required to lift or carry items such as files or office supplies weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse and other office equipment

Work Environment:

  • This is a hybrid role, requiring the associate to work in one of our corporate or regional offices 4 days per week
  • The office is an open setting which may include bright lights, constant noises and distractions
