The position: The VP of Risk Management, is responsible for overseeing the company’s risk management and loss prevention/mitigation programs with all RPM personnel. Specific areas of focus include claims management, timely and accurate incident reporting, timely and accurate investigation of accidents, coordination between insurance companies, clients and RPM personnel, ongoing review of pertinent legal updates across the country, maintaining programs that are compliant and effective in minimizing losses and protecting people and property. 

Responsibilities

  • Risk Strategy Development: Develop and execute comprehensive risk management strategies aligned with the company’s overall business objectives and growth plans.
  • Operational Risk Management: Oversee risk exposure for the company’s portfolio of residential properties, including physical safety, environmental hazards, compliance risks, and tenant liability.
  • Insurance & Claims Management: Lead the design and administration of the company’s insurance programs, including property, liability, workers' compensation, and other relevant coverages. Manage claims processes and ensure proper coordination with legal teams.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Oversight: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including safety standards (OSHA, EPA), fair housing laws, and property-related regulations. Monitor changes in legislation and ensure policies and procedures are updated accordingly.
  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Conduct regular risk assessments across all operations, identify vulnerabilities, and develop mitigation plans to minimize exposure. Collaborate with other departments to implement best practices for risk reduction.
  • Vendor and Contract Risk Review: Review and approve contracts with third-party vendors, ensuring appropriate indemnity and insurance requirements are in place to minimize exposure.
  • Crisis Management & Business Continuity: Develop and maintain business continuity plans to respond to potential crises such as natural disasters, property damage, or major incidents affecting operations.
  • Litigation & Legal Support: Collaborate with the Legal Department on potential litigation, contract disputes, or liability issues, advising senior leadership on risk exposure and mitigation strategies.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead and mentor the Risk Management team, ensuring their professional development while fostering a culture of proactive risk awareness.
  • Budget Management: Oversee risk management budgets, including insurance premiums, claims reserves, and risk mitigation project funding.
  • Reporting & Analytics: Provide regular reports to senior leadership on risk exposure, insurance claims, compliance audits, and overall risk management performance. Utilize data-driven insights to guide decision-making.
  • Client & Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as a primary point of contact for risk-related concerns from clients, investors, and key stakeholders, ensuring trust and transparency.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for RPM’s Risk Management programs and partner with all RPM providers partners to ensure efficient resolution of claims. Build, maintain and oversee relationships with claims adjusters, insurance carriers, outside legal counsel and other key stakeholders.
  • Oversee policy renewals, including the evaluation and implementation of strategic captive programs.
  • Ensure appropriate parties are connected with the right RPM personnel or clients to move the claim process forward.
  • Oversee the development and administration of company safety programs, and policies, programs and processes to improve safety performance and culture.
  • Develop, implement, and train Emergency Operations Procedures and Severe Weather protocols including monitoring severe weather patterns and alerting stakeholders of catastrophic weather conditions.
  • Oversee management of loss prevention or incident response acting as the primary contact for external stakeholders in related matters
  • Represents RPM in a professional manner at all times. Consistently maintains a professional courteous attitude when dealing with residents, coworkers and the general public.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration or related field. Experience may substitute for education.
  • Ten years of experience in risk management, insurance, claims and litigation management or related field with at least five years in a leadership role 
  • Multifamily or legal experience preferred
  • Required to possess reliable means of transportation to be used in the course of daily activities.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time 
  • Must be able to read documents, computer screens and data
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal communications in person and over the phone or computer
  • May occasionally be required to lift or carry items such as files or office supplies weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to operate a computer, keyboard, mouse and other office equipment

Work Environment:

  • This is an onsite role requiring the associate to work in our corporate office five days a week. 
  • The office is an open setting which may include bright lights, constant noises and distractions.
  • This role may require overnight travel quarterly.
